As the Free Flood Neighborhood Campaign launched on September 16th, 2023, in commemoration of World Cleanup Day, some climate justice campaigners within the Banen Bloc V community in Douala took onto the neighborhood to make the cleanup campaign a regular outdoor activity, as part of their commitment to ending flood and plastic littering in their neighborhood.

The efforts saw many young people, including of some parents support and call to action many of their peers, parents, and community champions to advocate and galvanize actions to what has been commonly identified as a challenge to the safety and cleanliness of their environment and neighborhood. In this outreach, our climate justice campaigners engaged in a diverse multiple series of activities, ranging from collecting plastic waste such as plastic bottles, wrappings, nylons, and bags on the streets, to getting rid of waste materials blocking water drainages and the free flow of standing waters within the neighborhood. Throughout the activity more than 1000 plastic waste was gathered and properly managed. In this, all the dirt collected were gathered and segregated for easy management and recycling. Since the start of the campaign, over 2 tons of plastic waste has been collected and gathered.

With many young people leading these transformative actions for climate justice within their communities, this grows the hope and commitments of all, as part of the climate justice campaign to free our neighborhoods from plastic waste and pollution that most importantly hinder the free flow of water through the different drainage channels, and to ensure that, our communities and neighborhoods are free from flood.
